Kicking off the Corporate Cup
April 30, 2010, 12:08 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com
Business and soccer hooliganism joined forces Wednesday to kick off the first annual Sounders FC Corporate Cup, a soccer tournament for local businesses that will raise money for America Scores Seattle. Crews of “corporate hooligans” — men and women dressed in business attire above the waist and soccer gear below the waist — conducted a lunchtime pub crawl in downtown Seattle on Wednesday to raise awareness for the event, which will begin with qualifier matches on July 24 and 25 before the championship match at Qwest Field on August 8. Organizers are hoping to get 32 corporations to register teams in the tournament, with Amazon, Expedia, Microsoft and UPS already entered. All proceeds from the Sounders FC Corporate Cup will benefit America Scores Seattle, a non-profit after-school program aimed at low-income elementary schools that encourages kids to play soccer and build literacy and writing skills, all with the goal of “getting children more engaged and successful in school,” said Carole Kelley, executive director for the 11-year-old organization.“American Scores gives kids a chance to be a part of a team and learn life lessons,” Kelley said. “Soccer is the world’s game and the uniting piece of it all. Our hope is to empower them to be successful and have an impact in their communities.”To enter a team or learn more about the Corporate Cup, visit the event’s website here. Local product in training
April 29, 2010, 3:00 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com
The Sounders FC were a bit short-handed in training today because of injuries that have trimmed their roster slightly. So, for today, they turned to Tacoma native and University of Washington product Raphael Cox. The Stadium High School product was in training, though not on trial, after being waived by Real Salt Lake in March."It's been a long road. I've been to Portland and Austin. Now I'm here and the coaching staff is letting me train a bit, which is nice. I'm hoping just to get some good training and if they need an extra player, I'm available. But if not, it's great training."A fourth round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, Cox played six games for Real Salt Lake last season, scoring his only goal in a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Crew. He made his MLS debut in Seattle when the Sounders hosted Real Salt Lake and the season finished with RSL hoisting the MLS Cup at Qwest Field."I got my first appearance in Seattle and we ended the season with the championship here. Even though I didn't play, it was great to have it here with friends and family," Cox said, adding that he has his championship ring in a special place at home. "I've shown it to my friends and family, but no, I don't wear it." » read full article

Keller at 100%
April 25, 2010, 11:31 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com
I spoke with Kasey Keller after the game about the head injury that knocked him out of the second half against Dallas. He has no ill-effects from the collision with Jeff Cunningham and played 90 minutes in the 2-0 loss to Toronto FC."I’m ok. I took a nice little headshot conceding that penalty," he said. "It deteriorated as the half went along and I wasn’t seeing very well and I didn’t want to be a detriment to the team. I was struggling there, so Terry came in and did a great job and it was unfortunate that we were not able to get a win out of that game. Later that evening things started to get better. I got a couple of good nights of sleep and everything was good." » read full article
