Martinez returns as Sounders continue Tucson camp

February 15, 2013, 12:05 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Sounders got back on the training ground on Thursday at Kino Sports Complex after topping the New England Revolution, 2-0, in the first match of the Desert Diamond Cup on Wednesday. While the starters from Wednesday’s match did a regen session, the reserves went through a full training session.  After the warm-up, they moved into a full-field 8v8 game with restrictions placed on the attacking to force them into timing their runs. They finished the session with the goals in tight and a series of short games. The team is expecting to be joined by Mario Martinez on Thursday after the playmaking midfielder dealt with some family matters in Honduras after he played in the Copa Centroamericana and the 2-1 win for Honduras over the US in their World Cup qualifying match last week. The Sounders have the afternoon off then get back to training on Friday in advance of their next Desert Diamond Cup match against Real Salt Lake.  The Sounders currently lead the Desert Diamond Cup standings with three points.  RSL and the New York Red Bulls are even with one point after their 2-2 draw on Wednesday and the Revolution are looking for their first points against New York on Saturday. » read full article

Gearing up for the Desert Diamond Cup

February 13, 2013, 6:05 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com

TUCSON, Ariz. – Before their first match of the Desert Diamond Cup, the Sounders got in one last training session on Tuesday and they pieced together some of the elements that will be included as focal points for Wednesday’s match against the New England Revolution. Osvaldo Alonso returned to training after missing Monday’s session while away at MLS marketing and media sessions in Miami, while Michael Gspurning arrived later in the afternoon and trained separately.  Additionally, Eddie Johnson rejoined camp on Tuesday evening, though it is unlikely he will be available for the match on Wednesday. After a warmup, the defenders went to one part of the field to work on defensive shape and moving the ball out of the back while the midfielders and forwards worked on shooting on the other end of the field. To finish out training, the team was split into three groups.  Two of them played 11v11 on the field as they prepared for the match on Wednesday as the third played 4v5 on a short field next to the Sounders FC’s training field at Kino Sports Complex. Those who are not starting in Wednesday’s match will train on Wednesday morning, while the starters are expected to approach 70 minutes in the match against the Revs.  The match will be streamed live on SoundersFC.com. » read full article

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Sounders arrived in Tucson on Monday and quickly got into training mode, bussing straight from the airport to Kino Sports Complex for their first session of the next phase of training camp – one that will include five matches.Kino will play host to the Sounders FC, New England Revolution, Real Salt Lake and the New York Red Bulls over the next two weeks with the Desert Diamond Cup tournament acting as the centerpiece event to the two-week training stint. The first day focused around an 8v8 possession drill with three teams rotating through the drill – two teams playing and the third doing fitness work.In Tucson, the Sounders were joined by Supplemental Draft selection Kevin Durr and non-roster invitee Mikael Silvestre.  Durr, a 21-year-old midfielder out of the Air Force Academy, had 18 goals and 19 assists in 77 career college matches.  Silvestre, 35, is a former French National Team center back who won five Premier League titles at Manchester United.  He also played for Inter Milan, Arsenal and Werder Bremen in his 16 seasons in Europe. The Sounders are awaiting the arrivals of Michael Gspurning, Osvaldo Alonso, Mario Martinez and Eddie Johnson.  Gspurning will join the team on Tuesday after welcoming his second child and first son on Sunday.  Alonso and Johnson were away at MLS marketing events in Miami and New York, respectively, and will both rejoin the team before their first match of the Desert Diamond Cup on Wednesday.  Martinez is attending a personal matter and is also expected before Wednesday’s match against the New England Revolution. » read full article

Sounders return to Starfire with Joseph and Johnson in tow

February 9, 2013, 4:05 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com

The Sounders FC returned to Starfire for a brief stop before heading back to Arizona for the next stage of training and held the first of two sessions on Friday and did so with plenty to talk about. After two days off, the Sounders got back to training Starfire and were joined by four-time MLS Best XI midfielder Shalrie Joseph. The former New England Revolution standout is currently under contract with Chivas USA, but is seeking opportunities elsewhere and landed in Sounders camp after the club received permission to look at Joseph in training.  Already familiar with many players with the club, Joseph got a rave review from forward Eddie Johnson.“He’s a very good player, a very experienced player,” Johnson said.  “He’s someone I wouldn’t mind having here.”Johnson didn’t take part in training with the team on Friday, though, as the four players who were away for international duty this week were given the day off.  Johnson, Brad Evans, Mario Martinez and Adam Johansson are all expected to rejoin training on Saturday.Joseph wasn’t the only non-roster player to make waves for the Sounders this week either.  As the club continues to seek depth on defense, Djimi Traore and Shavar Thomas both continued to train with the team.“Djimi played well down there, that’s why we’re keeping him with us.  I thought Shavar Thomas did OK as well,” head coach Sigi Schmid said.  “So we’re happy with that.”The team played 11v11 on a field that stretched from 18-to-18 as part of the training session and will look to add more to their efforts in coming days as they get ready for their next preseason match on Wednesday in Tucson against the New England Revolution. The Sounders will train again at Starfire on Saturday, then have Sunday off before departing for Tucson on Monday. » read full article

Sounders represented well in international play

February 7, 2013, 9:06 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

While teams around Major League Soccer are in preseason training, the attention of many teams shifted to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Wednesday, as the US National Team met Honduras in the hexagonal round of World Cup qualifying.  The first match of the final round of the CONCACAF region’s qualifying tournament for the 2014 World Cup featured six MLS players in the starting lineups, including Sounders FC forward Eddie Johnson for the US and midfielder Mario Martinez for Honduras. The US got out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Clint Dempsey, but an incredible bicycle kick by Juan Garcia and a second-half tap-in by Jerry Bengtson gave Honduras the win in the first of ten matches in the hexagonal round for both teams. Both Sounders starters had strong play in the first half, with Martinez providing the spark for much of the Honduras attack and Johnson giving a lift to an otherwise stale attack from the left wing.Johnson charged on a corner kick early in the match, but headed high, then spotted Jozy Altidore with a left-footed cross that Altidore lifted over the crossbar.  When Clint Dempsey opened scoring on a ball from Jermaine Jones, Johnson was right at his side, making a similar run.In the second half, Johnson was taken out in the 59th minute in favor of Sacha Kljestan while Martinez stayed on for the full 90 minutes and while he continued to have an impact, much of the focus for Honduras was pushed through Houston Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia at that point and he assisted on the game-winning goal by New England Revolution forward Jerry Bengtson. All told, Honduras used four MLS players in the match – all starters – with San Jose defender Victor Bernardez joining Martinez, Garcia and Bengtson.  The US used three MLS players – Johnson, Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi and LA Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez. The US will next play on March 22 against Costa Rica at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.  Honduras will host Mexico on March 22.In other hexagonal matches, Jamaica pulled the shock of the day in netting a 0-0 draw with Mexico at Estadio Azteca, while Costa Rica came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with Panama. In other action, Sweden hosted Argentina on Wednesday and Sounders FC defender Adam Johansson came on for the final 30 minutes in a 3-2 defeat in Stockholm.Johansson entered the match with Sweden trailing 3-1, replacing right back Mikael Lustig, whose own-goal in the third minute opened scoring in the match.  Sweden would add a stoppage time goal to make it 3-2, but couldn’t find the equalizer before full time. All four Sounders players on international duty are expected to be with the team when they start the next phase of training camp in Tucson, Arizona.  Their next preseason match will be Wednesday, February 13, against the New England Revolution. » read full article

Dallas adds two at forward

February 5, 2013, 1:36 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com

In 2012, FC Dallas boasted one of the top new forwards in the league in Panamanian striker Blas Perez.  On Monday, they added two more proven MLS goalscorers to their squad by trading a conditional draft pick to Toronto FC in exchange for Eric Hassli, then sent allocation money to the New York Red Bulls for Kenny Cooper. The move brings the leading scorers from the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps in their expansion seasons in 2011 together at FC Dallas.Cooper, 28, was second in MLS with 18 goals for the Red Bulls last season, matching his career high.  He played for FC Dallas from 2006-2009, netting 40 goals in 90 appearances before going to Europe to play first for 1860 Munich, then on loan with Plymouth Argyle.  He returned in 2011 to lead the Timbers with eight goals before being traded to New York in January, 2012.Hassli, 31, had ten goals in his first season in MLS in 2011 with the Whitecaps, but couldn’t repeat that success in 2012, netting just two goals in 18 matches before moving to Toronto FC in a midseason trade.  There, he had three goals in seven matches, but didn’t figure into the plans of new coach Ryan Nelsen. In exchange, Toronto FC received a conditional second round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Those weren’t the only trades in MLS on Monday though, as the Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire finalized a deal that sends midfielder Dilly Duka to Chicago for forward Dominic Oduro.Duka, 23, was the eighth overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft and had two goals and five assists in 45 matches over three seasons with the Crew.Oduro, 27, has played seven seasons in MLS, totaling 33 goals in 183 matches.  He had his best year in 2011, scoring 11 goals for the Fire, but came back with just six in 2012.  Columbus will be his fifth team in MLS.In the deal, the Fire also acquired the MLS rights for Robbie Rogers, who went to England to play for Leeds United last year and found himself on loan to Stevenage FC.  The midfielder had 13 goals in 106 matches for the Crew and also has 18 caps with the US National Team. » read full article
