Facing Off With The Galaxy

July 7, 2010, 7:23 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

The Sounders FC face the LA Galaxy tonight for the third time since May 8, this time in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.This meeting should be much different than the previous two encounters though, as both teams battle a congested schedule while balancing with the MLS regular season.  Seattle is playing their fourth match since returning from the World Cup break June 27.  For LA, it is their fourth match since June 26.The Sounders FC advanced to the Open Cup quarterfinals for the fourth straight year with a shootout victory over the Portland Timbers at PGE Park.  Nate Jaqua scored on a header in the 13th minute, but Bright Dike equalized in the 38th minute and that score held through 120 minutes of play.  Kasey Keller made two saves in the PK shootout and Zach Scott struck the game-winner to send the Sounders through to the quarterfinals.LA reached the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over AC St. Louis.  Chris Klein and Juninho scored second-half goals to earn the victory.LA's lineup was: Josh Saunders, Alex Cazumba, AJ DeLaGarza, Leonardo, Bryan Jordan, Eddie Lewis, Clint Mathis (Chris Birchall 81), Jovan Kirovski, Chris Klein, Tristan Bowen (Juninho 73) and Alan Gordon.Seattle used: Kasey Keller, Tyson Wahl, Taylor Graham, Zach Scott, James Riley, Miguel Montano (Steve Zakuani 69), Nathan Sturgis, Michael Seamon (Patrick Ianni 102), Sanna Nyassi, Nate Jaqua (Fredy Montero 62) and Roger Levesque.Kickoff is set for 7 pm from Starfire.  There will be a webcast of the game with Arlo White on the call on SoundersFC.com. » read full article

Back to the quarterfinals, again.

July 7, 2010, 1:23 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com

For the fourth straight year, the Sounders are in the US Open Cup quarterfinals.  For two years in the USL and now two years in MLS the Seattle franchise has tasted success in the 96-year-old tournament.  In each of the other three seasons, they reached the semifinal, with the club winning the Open Cup in 2009 after falling in the semifinal as a USL side in 2007 and 2008.Wednesday night at Starfire, they face the LA Galaxy, the same club they faced on Sunday in a 3-1 loss at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.  Three times last year, the Sounders FC faced teams on consecutive occurrences and in each, they won the second of the two meetings.  On May 23, Seattle drew 2-2 in Colorado before winning 1-0 in an Open Cup qualifier three days later.  On July 11, it was a 2-1 home win over the Houston Dynamo (remember Patrick Ianni’s bicycle kick winner?) preceding a 2-1 win at Starfire in the Open Cup semifinal on July 21.  Then on September 11 they won the Open Cup title with a 2-1 win over DC United ten days before returning to RFK Stadium for another 2-1 win.Repeating as champions, however, has proven to be a difficult feat.  No team since 1994 – considered the “professional era” – has repeated as champions, though five defending champs have returned to the final.  The last club to successfully defend their title was the New York Pancyprian Freedoms in 1982-83.Wednesday night’s meeting is a sellout at Starfire.  Kickoff is set for 7 pm with gates opening at 5:30 for the general admission event.  For those that can’t make the match, it will be broadcast live on www.soundersfc.com.If the Sounders FC advances, they will host the winner of the Houston Dynamo-Chivas USA match tonight.  Houston would play August 31, while Chivas USA would be September 1.  Either opponent would play at Starfire in the semifinal. And, for further reading, here are some unrelated articles I enjoyed.First, Kasey Keller was featured in AirTran Magazine, highlighting Seattle as a travel destination and a Sounders match as surefire entertainment.Meanwhile, AOL Fanhouse encourages support of the US National Team through support of MLS.  Supporting the domestic league, senior writer Brian Straus argues, raises the profile of that league and, in tern, the quality of the play. And finally, Freddie Ljungberg offered his take on the World Cup semis.Great reads, all, and I encourage you to check them out. » read full article

And so it ends, and so it begins!

July 2, 2010, 5:26 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

With the group stage and the first round knockout games done, we are down to the quarterfinals of what is quickly becoming a very good tournament. At first, too many teams played for the draw in order to get points on the board, but now it seems that every team is ready to go out and take risks in order to keep their run going.  Two teams I was hoping would still be playing, England and the US, were both knocked out in the round of 16 in very different circumstances. While the US battled Ghana into extra time only to be outdone by a great finish from the Ghana striker, England were battered by Germany from start to finish.  Of course people back home are talking about the Lampard "goal" which definitely would have changed the course of the game, but I think the main talking point should be about the beautiful play by Germany.  Their goals were very well taken.Despite my disappointment at the US being knocked out, I was actually slightly supporting Ghana in that game because they are the only African representatives remaining.  The entire continent has now embraced them as "their" team, and it's great to see them going on even though they face a very good Uruguay team next. The usual suspects are hitting form now - Spain, Holland, Argentina, Brazil, and Germany - but my pick to win hasn't changed so I'm still going with Argentina.  Messi has been the best player for me, he hasn't scored but he's been great to watch and involved in so many of his teams goals.  The attention he receives from defenders frees up his teammates which is why they seem to be scoring at will.  It'll be sad to wave goodbye to either Brazil or Holland and also to one of Argentina or Germany but that's what the knockout stage is about - win or go home!Speak soon!
