HALFTIME: Neagle and Rosales post Sounders to 2-0 lead over San Jose
May 11, 2013, 9:35 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com
SEATTLE â The Sounders were looking to carry the momentum from their great stretch of road games with seven points from three games into their return home on Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes. After racing out to a 2-0 first-half lead off of goals by Lamar Neagle and Mauro Rosales, it has been a great homecoming for the Rave Green. The match started with Seattle taking control from the opening whistle. In the ninth minute, the Sounders transition into the attacking third nearly led to an early lead. Brad Evans played a long ball to Neagle, who touched it down to Eddie Johnson. The Sounders forward then returned the pass to Neagle running to the middle, creating a two-on-one with Dan Gargan. Neagle fired a shot from 25 yards out heading toward the far corner, but missed just wide.In the 24th minute, Rosales got on the end of a cross from Evans, but his diving header went back across the front of the open net and was cleared by San Jose.Seattleâs attack finally paid dividends in the 28th minute. Johnson played the ball into the box for Rosales, who chested it down to Neagle charging down the middle to rocket a shot past Jon Busch for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Sounders lead.It was the third assist of the year for Rosales and first for Johnson. The Earthquakes attempted nine shots, but Michael Gsrpuning didnât need to make a save until the 42nd minute, then made a pair of saves on Chris Wondolowski and Alan Gordon to keep the Sounders up 1-0.Just as the match headed into first-half stoppage time, Rosales made it 2-0 off a brilliant free kick goal, bending it over the four-man San Jose wall and into the near post, caroming into the net for his second goal of the season. The Sounders are on a 35-match unbeaten streak when scoring first and they will look to continue that success in the second half.ScoringSounders FC â Lamar Neagle (Mauro Rosales, Eddie Johnson) 28; Mauro Rosales 46+.Earthquakes â None.DisciplineSounders FC â None.Earthquakes â Rafael Baca (caution) 45.LineupsSounders FC â Michael Gspurning, DeAndre Yedlin, Zach Scott, Djimi Traore, Leo Gonzalez, Mauro Rosales, Osvaldo Alonso, Servando Carrasco, Brad Evans, Lamar Neagle, Eddie Johnson.Earthquakes â Jon Busch, Steven Beitashour, Justin Morrow, Victor Bernardez, Dan Gargan, Rafael Baca, Sam Cronin, Ramiro Corrales, Walter Martinez, Chris Wondolowski, Alan Gordon. » read full article

MLS Rewind: Week 11A
May 10, 2013, 4:35 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com
Itâs a midweek edition of MLS rewind after there were six matches played around the league on Wednesday night. While the Sounders FC needed last-minute heroics from Djimi Traore to get a 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City, the Houston Dynamo were much more convincing in their 4-0 win over DC United at RFK Stadium. Will Bruin had two goals and two assists, helping set up goals by Giles Barnes and Andrew Driver as the Dynamo keep pace atop the Eastern Conference in a tie for first with the New York Red Bulls at 6-2-2 while DC United continues to struggle, going winless in their last seven matches to fall to 1-7-1.It was the Thierry Henry Show at Red Bull Arena as the superstar forward scored twice to lead New York to a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact. His double included a second-half bicycle kick off a corner kick for his sixth multi-goal game in MLS. New York stayed tied with Houston at 6-4-2 while Montreal dropped to 5-2-2.At Gillette Stadium, the New England Revolution got out to a 1-0 lead, but RSL battled back with some new faces as Devon Sandoval and Olmes Garcia scored to give Real Salt Lake the 2-1 win. Nick Rimando saved a stoppage-time penalty by Saer Sene to keep all three points and push Salt Lake to second in the West at 5-4-2. New England falls to 2-4-3.At FC Dallas Stadium, the Timbers took a 1-0 lead on a Darlington Nagbe goal, but Kenny Cooper continued to haunt his former club as he converted a 77th minute penalty to earn a 1-1 draw. Cooper now has two goals and one assist in two matches against the Timbers. He played for Portland in their inaugural season in 2011, but was traded to New York, then Dallas, where he started his MLS career in 2006. Dallas remains atop the West at 6-1-3 while Portland is third at 3-1-6.Finally in San Jose, Chris Wondolowski had a goal and an assist to lead the charge for the Earthquakes against Toronto FC. The visitors got a first-half goal from Justin Braun â his second of the season after going scoreless in 2012. However, Adam Jahn scored in the 48th minute to equalize and Wondolowski capped the comeback with the game-winner in the 81st minute for a 2-1 victory. San Jose is now 3-3-5 while Toronto is 1-5-4. » read full article

HALFTIME: Sounders and Sporting KC scoreless at the break
May 9, 2013, 1:35 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com
KANSAS CITY, Kansas â Look at the stats and it would appear that Sporting Kansas City dominated the Sounders in the first half of their match at Sporting Park on Wednesday night. They outshot the Sounders 10-5, putting three on frame to just one for Seattle. They even held 58-percent of possession, but the Sounders went into the locker room with a glow of confidence as they kept the match scoreless and had plenty of offense throughout the first half.Jacob Peterson got the gameâs first shot just 17 seconds into the match, winning the ball on the left side and firing a shot that Michael Gspurning saved diving to his left.Seattle had a pair of shots in the eight minute, the first from Brad Evans being blocked and the second missing high when Mario Martinez shot from 23 yards out off the rebound. In the 14th minute looked to open scoring, but Peterson Joseph missed just outside the far post when he charged on a Seattle clearance attempt.Evans then got on the end of a Martinez free kick in the 20th minute but missed high with his header.Martinez nearly made it 1-0 in the 28th minute when he thumped a free kick around the wall from 27 yards out on the right side but Jimmy Nielsen dove to his right for the save to keep the match scoreless. In the 43rd minute, Chance Myers played in a shot from the top right corner for the box, but Gspurning was there to smother it for the save, his third of the half. The Sounders did experience a loss in the first half though. After taking umbrage to a perceived missed handball in the box, backup goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann was dismissed, leaving the Sounders without a goalkeeper on the bench. He will also serve a one-match suspension on Saturday when the Sounders host the San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field.ScoringSounders FC â None.Sporting KC â None.DisciplineSounders FC â Marcus Hahnemann (ejection) 24.Sporting KC â Ike Opara (caution) 45.LineupsSounders FC â Michael Gspurning, Zach Scott, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Djimi Traore, Leo Gonzalez, Brad Evans, Osvaldo Alonso, Servando Carrasco, Mario Martinez, Eddie Johnson, David Estrada.Sporting KC â Jimmy Nielsen, Chance Myers, Ike Opara, Aurelien Collin, Josh Gardner, Uri Rosell, Benny Feilhaber, Peterson Joseph, Graham Zusi, CJ Sapong, Jacob Peterson. » read full article

MLS Rewind: Week 10
May 6, 2013, 7:36 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com
Teams around MLS are testing their depth and fitness with three games in a week and it all started with the action this past weekend.Seattleâs next opponent on Wednesday had perhaps the best night of the week, stampeding Chivas USA with a 4-0 victory at Sporting Park on Sunday, getting two goals from Claudio Bieler and more from Graham Zusi and CJ Sapong to move into a four-way tie for first in the East at 5-3-2. After a fast start, Chivas has gone winless in their last four games at 0-3-1 to drop to 3-4-2.On Saturday, the Sounders will meet the San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field and over the weekend they had their typical last-minute heroics to earn a 2-2 draw with the Montreal Impact. Justin Mapp scored twice to stake the Impact to a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute, but the Earthquakes rallied back with a goal from Adam Jahn before Sam Cronin netted the stoppage-time equalizer. San Jose is now 2-3-5 and Montreal is 5-1-2.The week started with a match in Portland on Thursday and the New England Revolution continued their run of solid defensive work with their fifth shutout of the year and third scoreless draw. Bobby Shuttleworth finished with nine saves to hold off the Timbers attack at JELD-WEN Field as New England moved to 2-3-3 while the Timbers are now 3-1-5.In Colorado, Edson Buddle scored his first goal of the year and Clint Irwin got back on track with his third shutout of the year as the Rapids leapt past Toronto FC 1-0. Buddleâs 86th minute goal lifted Colorado to 3-4-3 while Toronto dipped to 1-4-4.At Rio Tinto Stadium, Real Salt Lake got second-half goals from Luis Gil and Javier Morales to race past the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0 as Vancouver fell to 2-4-3 and RSL jumped to 4-4-2 behind their third shutout of the season. In a rematch of the last two MLS Cup finals, the Houston Dynamo edged the LA Galaxy 1-0 on Andrew Driverâs second goal of the year. Tally Hall saved a Landon Donovan penalty, the second time already that Donovan has been stonewalled on a PK attempt, to preserve the shutout. It was Hall's third shutout of the season to lift the Dynamo to 5-2-2 while the Galaxy dropped to 4-2-2.Finally in Columbus, Tim Cahill scored his third goal of the season and Luis Robles had six saves, including one on a Fedrerico Higuain penalty as the Red Bulls staked their claim atop the Eastern Conference at 5-4-2 with a 1-0 victory over the Crew. The loss ended a 12-game home unbeaten streak for the Crew and drops them to 3-3-3. » read full article
