Huge time for soccer in the US

June 24, 2010, 10:23 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

It's a huge time right now for soccer in the US, and in the Northwest for that matter.Proof positive of that comes in my two-week calendar that started on Tuesday night in Bremerton. There, at Memorial Stadium, I was hoping to see an uprising from the PDL when the Kitsap Pumas hosted the Portland Timbers.  After already posting a preseason victory over the Timbers, I was optimistic about the team's chances.  However, head coach Pete Fewing's squad found themselves down 2-0 at halftime when two quick strikes from the Timbers late in the first half found the back of the net.  Coach Fewing said after the match that he thought Portland took their foot off the gas a bit in the second half, but it was still nice to see the Pumas pull a goal back late in the game, though they ended up losing 4-1.Why make the drive to Bremerton for a PDL-USL match, you might ask?  Well, this was a meeting in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.  The winner advanced to host the Sounders FC next week.  That means I can add a trip to Portland to my itinerary over the next few weeks, but we'll get to that shortly. After driving back home on Tuesday night, I went on to the Southcenter Azteca restaurant on Wednesday morning where the Sounders FC was hosting a viewing party for the US-Algeria game.  I've called this game crucial, but I think that is a drastic understatement.  Landon Donovan's 91st minute goal sent shockwaves through the sports world, sending the US National Team through the Group Stage as the winner of Group C.  It was an unbelievable moment shared with some pretty remarkable people at Azteca.  Everyone was on their feet and, love 'em or not, many were blasting their vuvuzelas (or "horns" as one friend calls them).  Great atmosphere and I wish I could be there at the Sounders FC viewing party at Fox Sports Grill on Saturday when the US faces Ghana.Instead though, I'll be in Philadelphia, where the Sounders FC will face the Philadelphia Union at brand new PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.  It's a great chance for the Sounders FC to kick off the second half of the season in front of a national TV audience on ESPN2 - and it'll be an audience primed for soccer with all of the World Cup excitement.Following that trip to Pennsylvania, I'll head south to Portland where the Sounders FC will face the aforementioned Timbers in the third round of the Open Cup.  We all remember Roger Levesque's first-minute goal and the Sounders moving past the Timbers in last year's tournament.  We also remember the atmosphere there at PGE Park.  It was great fun then watching a Sounders FC win on their way to the US Open Cup crown and I can't wait to see them defend the title on Wednesday night.  If you can't make it down to Portland, make sure you catch the match on FSN Northwest. If the US advances past Ghana, my schedule has them playing the Uruguay-South Korea winner on Friday, July 2.  Either way, the World Cup quarterfinals on Friday and Saturday will be an exciting watch. Then on the 4th of July, I'll be celebrating our nation's independence in Los Angeles when the Sounders face the LA Galaxy. It'll be a long journey over the next 10 days, but I'm excited to be on it.  Things are really picking up with the second half of the MLS season upon us.Who's coming with me? » read full article

Old Friends, New Foes

June 22, 2010, 11:23 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

When the Sounders FC take the pitch at PPL Park to face the expansion Philadelphia Union on Sunday, two old friends may square off from across the field.Three years ago, Sounders FC forward Miguel Montaño played on the same youth team as Philadelphia midfielder Roger Torres and now they have the chance to face each other.Friends away from the pitch, Montaño has a unique perspective on Torres on the field and can help in the scouting of the dynamic 18-year-old Colombian.“He’s a very good player – an excellent player,” the 19-year-old Montaño said.  “When we played together I played as a forward and he played as a midfielder and he always got the ball forward and made great plays.  He’s moved around to a couple of different teams professionally and now playing in MLS.  He’s an excellent player.”Torres has been a professional for nearly one year, signing with America de Cali shortly after his 18th birthday last year.  Now, he and Montaño join a growing list of Colombians plying their trade in Major League Soccer.“Fredy gave me a lot of support when I came here.  That was great,” Montaño said.  “We’re all Colombians so we have to support each other wherever we are.”Not yet sure if he will make the travelling squad for the match with Philadelphia, Montaño is hoping to make the trip – and having lunch with his old friend.“I’d love to.  If the coaches decide that I will go to Philadelphia I’d absolutely love to,” he said.Torres has three assists for the Union and has appeared in 10 matches, seven of them starts.  He has notched 544 minutes.  Montaño has played 75 minutes in three games off the bench for Seattle.Kickoff is set for 2 pm from PPL Park.  The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.  Locally, 97.3 KIRO FM will carry the radio broadcast. » read full article

Back To Starfire

June 21, 2010, 4:23 am sourced from feedproxy.google.com

After over a week off for the World Cup break, the Sounders FC returned to training today at Starfire and saw some familiar faces getting work done.Nate Jaqua and Peter Vagenas were both in the full training session and Osvaldo Alonso completed nearly all of training before finishing up with some fitness work.  It was a positive step forward for a Sounders club that has already lost Jaqua for 13 games, Alonso for five games and starting center back Jhon Kennedy Hurtado for four games to this point.  Hurtado is not expected back until the playoffs, at the very earliest, but in Alonso and Jaqua, the Sounders reacquire the middle-of-the-field strengths that made them so dangerous in 2009.In Jaqua they are adding a player that notched career highs in goals (9) and assists (7) while playing a forward with Fredy Montero for most of the season.  In his absense, the Sounders have struggled to score, until recently with a 3-0 win over the New England Revolution and a 3-2 defeat to DC United. The Sounders return to the field Sunday, at PPL Park against the Philadelphia Union.  The game is televised nationally on ESPN2 and is the first match in Philadelphia's new stadium. » read full article

A Trip to Pretoria for Denmark-Cameroon

June 20, 2010, 7:23 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

Last night we witnessed our last match of the World Cup. We traveled to Pretoria and caught Denmark-Cameroon. I hope that you got to see it because it might have been the most exciting match that we've attended. I should say that it was the best match that we've seen outside the USA matches because we hold those at a different level. We've been to a total of six matches and now we are heading to London for a couple days before we travel home on Tuesday. I wish that we were in London for England's last fixture (they play Wednesday) because I would love to be watching with a bunch of nervous English as they try to get through with Slovenia on their docket. In Pretoria last night the action was non-stop. What the Danish were doing in their own end early on and giving up the ball and handing Samuel Eto a chance that close to the net, I'll never know. But the Danes came back thanks to Bendter and Romadahl and came away with three huge points. We had watched Denmark as they were overpowered by the Netherlands in their first match and this seemed like a different team playing with a much different confidence level. At Soccer City they were never ontrack against the Orange but they played strong vs. Cameroon, I was very excited to see Eto play for the first time and as I like to say, "he is better." Everytime he touched the ball he did something special. Even if it was trapping the ball from an awkward angle then taking off like a jet he was just very fun to watch.Last night we met some great people at the stadium. We were surprised to see police from Denmark on the grounds. They were very nice, almost on vacation themselves. They let us know that they were working with the local authorities and helping them locate and identify any hooligans that made the trip down from Denmark. I asked them if they really had hooligans and they both kind of chuckled and said NO. This guy below (or friends of his) have been at every match trying to collect tickets for "his collection." This is after all the games but we do see these signs everywhere. And the random picture of the day is that, yes mullets are still alive and well. This nice man has a TON of hair! At the end of the match a dejected Eto cannot believe that Cameroon's world cup has come to and end while the Danes waved to their fans.  I just came upstairs after we watched the Italians and the shock tie to New Zealand. Now New Zealand, who tied Slovakia in their first match, are sitting on two points and have a chance of moving forward if they could get a result over Paraguay. I love the 2nd games of the tournament. They are so important, so pressure packed that you can't really take you eyes off the field of screen.I'm lucky enough to be on vacation so we have caught all three games everyday; either one in person and two on TV or all on the tube. We are well into the day when the first match starts (1:30 Local) and don't have to get up early in the morning as my friends in Seattle have been trying to do.Well, it's time to head to the airport as my time in South Africa is done...Kind of bummed out about it but I'm getting more and more excited to be home.I'll check in from London,Matt » read full article

USA Fans Pack Stadium in Johannesburg

June 18, 2010, 9:25 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

Well, what a bummer! Off to a slow start then teased with what looked to us as the winning goal we left Ellis Park very dejected. The US fans packed the stadium and made noise (not just with the plastic horns) the entire match. Obviously down 2-0 there wasn't too much to cheer for but small chances gave everyone hope. When Landon when top roof the place went nuts. Everyone wanted to explode and we finally had our chance. As everyone watched around the world the American pressed on and held Slovenia in check. We had great seats again but for the 4th game in a row we had no access to instant replay so someone is going to have to clue me in on why the goal was taken away.In person, we did not see anything wrong with it. As a matter of fact the real speed of the match and that moment looked clean as can be as we were all puzzled what the ref had witnessed.Well, sometimes the game is made to break your heart but coming away with a point still gives us a chance as we play Algeria. The stadium itself is in a very tough neighborhood...Actually, it is right in the middle of an area of apartment complexes. We are back at the hotel planning our evening which will include the English match that is coming up in 10 minutes.Keep the faith and we'll get through over Algeria.Matt » read full article

USA-Slovenia packs Fado

June 18, 2010, 8:23 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

If you weren't at Fado on First Avenue in Seattle today, you missed a jam-packed establishment full of hopeful fans of the US National Team watching what ended up being a 2-2 draw.  The mood never wavered, even when Slovenia carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.  The entire building erupted when Landon Donovan scored the pull the score to 2-1.  Then again when Michael Bradley tied it up.  The top blew off the joint when Maurice Edu appeared to put the US up 3-2 and all were collectively quizzical when the goal was waved off.  As the lot filed out after the final whistle everyone was calculating what result they were hoping for when England faces Algeria and how each possible result affects the chances of a US advancement to the Round of 16.Where did you watch the match? What were the reactions there? Also, make sure you join me at Azteca in Southcenter for the US-Algeria match on Wednesday the 23rd at 11:30.  See you there. » read full article

Swiss for a day

June 17, 2010, 7:24 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com

I am finally over my jet lag and so I've now been sleeping, eating, and generally operating on the British time zone, and no longer Pacific. So last night, and today, I was able to watch the World Cup games without feeling tired and dozing off and then having to rely on highlights afterward.I watched Brazil play, and even though North Korea kept them off the board in the first half, I was convinced they would score at least a couple and that proved to be case. One of my favorite players in the modern game is Robinho, and all of my friends will tell you how annoying I can be when he gets the ball because I start screaming and cheering even his five-yard passes!Today, I was only able to watch the very end of the Honduras and Chile game so I can't say too much about that, although according to Arlo White's Twitter, Chile were very good. There was only one opening round game I've been looking forward to almost as much as the England and US game, and that was the Switzerland and Spain game. Firstly because Spain are a great team but mainly because Blaise Nkufo plays for the Swiss. Knowing that he will be with us in about a month automatically made me a Swiss fan for the day.I can talk all day about how amazing Spain's passing was, especially from Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Iniesta and Pique, but the most impressive thing was the way Switzerland executed their game plan. They, like the rest of us, knew that they could not afford to get into a passing contest with Spain and so they focused on defending as a team from front to back, and then playing on the counter attack. It worked, and they got a massive win out of it.As for Blaise, I think we can all see what he will bring to Seattle. He can hold the ball up, he scores, he makes good runs, and he was still going strong in the 90th minute. Not bad for a 35-year-old veteran! Now I'm looking forward to the next set of games because teams need to play to win now. A lot of teams played "not to lose" in their first game, which is understandable, but now they have no choice but to attack and try to get some points on the board so that they can qualify for the next round. This scenario should make for some more entertaining games from here on out.Speak soon!
