MLS Rewind: Week 7
April 15, 2013, 6:06 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com
After a light weekend that saw five teams take a bye â four with games being rescheduled to account for Los Angeles and Seattleâs CONCACAF Champions League games - this weekend seemed like an all-you-can-eat buffet of Major League Soccer with a full slate of games on the schedule. We start with the leaders in the Western Conference, as FC Dallas hosted the LA Galaxy, who were coming off of a 1-0 loss to fall 3-1 to Monterrey in the CCL semifinals. Dallas, meanwhile, held a three point lead in the West over Chivas USA heading into the match. It looked like the Galaxy might sneak out with a road draw despite going down a man for the final 30 minutes when centerback Leonardo was sent off. They also squandered a golden opportunity when they were awarded a penalty just minutes after saving one from Dallas forward Kenny Cooper. Landon Donovan had his spot kick saved though and in the 87th minute, Dallas finally took advantage when UW product and Seattle native George John headed in a rebound to push Dallas to 5-1-1 while LA falls to 2-1-2 with their first defeat of the year. Dallas now holds a six-point lead in the West as Chivas USA fell 1-0 to the Sounders FCâs next opponents, the Colorado Rapids. Rookie forward Deshorn Brown converted a penalty in the seventh minute and the Rapids held on for the road victory to climb to 2-3-2 while Chivas ended a four-game unbeaten streak to drop to 3-2-1 with the home defeat. It was the second goal of the season for Brown and the second straight shutout for goalkeeper Clint Irwin, filling in for the injured Matt Pickens.Cascadia rivals the Portland Timbers have jumped to third in the West with a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes Sunday night at JELD-WEN Field. San Jose went down a man when Alan Gordon was shown a second yellow card and Will Johnson scored his third goal of the year off a 25-yard free kick that twisted over the San Jose wall and into the net to lift Portland to 2-1-3 while San Jose is now 2-2-2.In Vancouver, the Whitecaps hosted Real Salt Lake at BC Place and RSL suffered two unfortunate incidents to settle for the 1-1 draw. Olmes Garcia scored his first goal for RSL in the 66th minute, but that lead was wiped away when defender Nat Borchers slipped and was whistled for a handball in the box. Camilo Sanvezzo converted the penalty to draw the teams level and thatâs the way it would stay as the two teams remain even in the West with eight points, Vancouver at 2-2-2 and RSL at 2-3-2. Earlier in the match, Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman suffered a rib injury and was subbed off in the first half for Yordany Alvarez.Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference, the Houston Dynamo set the MLS record by running their home unbeaten streak to 35 matches with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. Brad Davis had a goal and an assist for Houston, setting up a first-half goal by Will Bruin before scoring the game-winner in the second half. Houston is now second in the East at 4-2-0. Chris Rolfe scored the lone goal for Chicago, who fall to 1-4-1.In Montreal, Marco Di Vaio and Dominic Oduro traded second half goals as the Impact and Columbus Crew fought to a 1-1 draw. It was the third goal of the season for both players as Montreal remains atop the East at 4-1-1 and Columbus moves to 2-1-3.A pair of the leagueâs top scorers traded goals at PPL Park as Torontoâs Robert Earnshaw scored his fifth goal of the year, but Philadelphiaâs Jack McInerney would have the last laugh, scoring a stoppage-time equalizer against the 10-man Union side. Philadelphia played down a man for the final two minutes plus stoppage time when defender Ashtone Morgan picked up his second yellow card. The Union are now 2-2-2 while Toronto is 1-2-3.Finally at RFK Stadium, the New York Red Bulls got goals from Thierry Henry and Jamison Olave while Luis Robles earned his first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over DC United. New York is now fifth in the East at 2-3-2 while DC takes up the bottom of the standings at 1-4-1. » read full article

HALFTIME: Sounders on the brink of breaking through
April 13, 2013, 9:35 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com
SEATTLE â The Sounders FC dominated all aspects of the first half of their match with the New England Revolution on Saturday, completing 83-percent of their passes while holding over 66-percent of possession and outshooting the Revolution, 8-1. However, neither team could nick a goal and they went into the break tied 0-0.In the seventh minute, Seattle had a pair of dangerous set pieces, but a free kick by Mauro Rosales was played away for a corner and the short corner resulted in a flicked header by Jhon Kennedy Hurtado that missed the top corner. In the 14th minute, Lamar Neagle picked the ball off of AJ Soares and raced into the box where he played it across to Steve Zakuani, but his first-time effort was blocked by Jose Goncalves sliding in for the save. On the ensuing corner kick, Osvaldo Alonso crushed a half-volley that looked headed for the top corner, but Bobby Shuttleworth appeared to tip it by the very edge of his glove to keep the Sounders off the board. The Sounders continued to dominate possession throughout the half and New England didnât manage their first shot until the 35th minute â a Lee Nguyen effort that missed well wide of the mark.Zakuani got another opportunity in the 43rd minute when he cut into the box on the left side and jetted around Jose Goncalves, but his right-footed shot was blocked by Shuttleworth.ScoringSounders FC â None.Revolution â None.DisciplineSounders FC â None.Revolution â None.LineupsSounders FC â Michael Gspurning, DeAndre Yedlin, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Djimi Traore, Leo Gonzalez, Mauro Rosales, Osvaldo Alonso, Shalrie Joseph, Alex Caskey, Steve Zakuani, Lamar Neagle.Revolution â Bobby Shuttleworth, Andrew Farrell, Jose Goncalves, AJ Soares, Chris Tierney, Kalifa Cisse, Juan Toja, Lee Nguyen, Clyde Simms, Kelyn Rowe, Jerry Bengtson. » read full article
Neagle and Zakuani start up top for the Sounders against New England
April 13, 2013, 8:05 pm sourced from feedproxy.google.com
The Sounders are looking for their first win in MLS on Saturday afternoon, but they will have to do it without forwards Eddie Johnson and Obafemi Martins. Sidelined by hamstring and knee injuries, respectively, Johnson and Martins are both out of the 18 for Seattleâs match with the New England Revolution at CenturyLink Field. In their place will be the speedy, athletic combination of Lamar Neagle, who scored Seattleâs only goal in a 1-1 draw with Santos Laguna on Tuesday, and Steve Zakuani, who spent most of his time on the field stretching the Santos defense with his speedy runs and one-on-one play. This will also be the first time Mauro Rosales and Alex Caskey have started together in the midfield in MLS play this year. Rosales will start on the right side of midfield with Caskey on the left, though they both tend to play free-ranging roles. In the middle of midfield will be the duo of Osvaldo Alonso and Shalrie Joseph, who paired well in the Champions League series with Santos Laguna. Joseph spent nine and a half seasons with the Revolution before a midseason trade to Chivas USA last year and had two goals in his only career appearance against the Revs.On defense, head coach Sigi Schmid turns to a back four of DeAndre Yedlin, Djimi Traore, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and Leo Gonzalez in front of goalkeeper Michael Gspurning. On the bench for Seattle will be Marcus Hahnemann, Marc Burch, Zach Scott, Andy Rose, Phillip Lund, Mario Martinez and Sammy Ochoa. On the other side of the field, New England will start Bobby Shuttleworth in goal; a defense of rookie Andrew Farrell, AJ Soares, Jose Goncalves and Chris Tierney; a midfield of Lee Nguyen, Clyde Simms, Kalifa Cisse and Federal Way native Kelyn Rowe; and the forwards will be Jerry Bengtson and Juan Toja.New England coach Jay Heaps will have Matt Reis, Saer Sene, Donald Smith, Diego Fagundez, Darrius Barnes, Stephen McCarthy and Andy Dorman. » read full article
